The student population at the Killeen Independent School District is aging. As a result, some of its teachers may have to seek employment elsewhere.

Despite a projected increase in student enrollment from 41,414 students this school year to an anticipated 42,019 students in the 2014-2015 school year, the school board’s discussion on staffing allocations during its monthly workshop Thursday accounted for a net loss of teachers.

Overall, the district will have 38 fewer teachers for the upcoming school year based on enrollment numbers.

At the elementary level, there will be 49 fewer teachers, however, the district will add six bilingual teachers due to growth in that department.

Middle schools also will see a decrease of seven teaching positions.

Killeen ISD does expect to add 11 high school positions and one teacher at the career center next year, to account for the surge in its high school enrollment.

The district currently has about 2,800 teachers, said Robert Muller, Killeen ISD superintendent.

The district did not provide information about which schools are expected to receive staff reductions or how the positions they cut will be determined.

However, officials said they’ve been using the same formula to determine staff allocations for about two decades.

The board will vote on staffing allocations for the 2014-2015 school year during its meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 11 at the district’s central office, 200 N. W.S. Young Drive.

“We need to ask the board to take action because (staff allocating) is what drives the budget,” Muller said.
