Members of the Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees approved plans for a comprehensive assessment of the district’s schools and facilities at their regular meeting Tuesday night.

In a 5-1 vote, the board authorized Forth Worth-based architecture, engineering and management firm Huckabee and Associates to conduct the assessment, which will inventory the condition of nearly every building, school and system in the Killeen district and create a comprehensive database that can be used to monitor maintenance, repairs and life-cycle replacement.

“(The assessment) will help us clarify priorities that we may not even know about,” said Ken Crawford, the district’s executive director of facilities services. “We want to get out ahead of any problems.”

The board approved a contract with Huckabee at a cost not to exceed $400,000.

Board member Susan Jones said she thought the assessment would provide board members with better information to make decisions about spending money on future facilities projects.

“I think it makes absolutely all the sense in the world,” Jones said.

Board member Kenneth Ray was absent from Tuesday’s meeting. Board vice president Terry Delano was the lone dissenting vote on the contract.

“We spend a lot of money keeping up these facilities,” Delano said. “In my opinion, I guess I don’t see the urgency in spending $400,000 on this facilities assessment.”

District Superintendent Robert Muller said the assessment was necessary, and would allow the district to better target the needs of its facilities.

“It would allow us to prioritize the finite resources we have for capital projects,” Muller told board members Tuesday.
