As the 2012-13 school year comes to a close, the Killeen Independent School District will once again feed thousands of children throughout the community as part of its Summer Servings program.
The school nutrition department will offer two free meals a day to area children from a number of locations. The program is sponsored and funded by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
“We are a large school district with more than 50 percent of kids that are economically disadvantaged and get a free or reduced lunch,” said Steve Murphy, Killeen ISD’s director for school nutrition. “We want to make sure that these kids are fed properly during the summer months.”
Beginning Monday, the district will offer the free meals to children between the ages of 1 and 18 at 16 campus locations in Killeen, Harker Heights, Nolanville and at Fort Hood.
While the meal program at the campuses ends June 27, Killeen ISD also plans to offer meals at other locations in July and August.
In addition to serving meals at its campus sites, Murphy said the district will provide meals at a number of community organizations this summer, including the Killeen and Gatesville Boys & Girls Club, the Armed Services YMCA and the Killeen Housing Authority.
“We want to be able to feed as many kids as we possibly can,” Murphy said. “These are kids who would not otherwise be able to get two, healthy meals each day during the summer.”
Murphy said Killeen ISD expects to serve more than 11,300 meals a day at the height of the summer program, compared to 7,800 the year before. The program will not only provide meals for children in need, but will also keep 130 Killeen school nutrition employees working through the summer.
Copperas Cove ISD also will host a summer nutrition program this year, serving two meals a day to children ages 1 to 18 at Copperas Cove Junior High School from Tuesday to June 27. Meals will be served at Hettie Halstead Elementary School from Tuesday to Aug. 16.
