Parents and legal guardians lined up at Ellison High School on Monday to enroll their children in the Killeen Independent School District for the 2013-2014 school year.

Monday was the first day KISD opened its district enrollment center, which allows parents to sign up students in prekindergarten through 12th grade who are new to the district.

Parents and legal guardians were asked to bring documentation, including immunization records, proof or residency and birth certificates to the center in order to enroll their children. The center will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Aug. 8.

The center is expected to enroll thousands of KISD students for the new school year. District demographer Jeff Heckathorn said the center processed 3,070 for the 2011-2012 school year, and 3,773 for the 2012-2013 school year.

“I’d guess that we would process about the same as last year, maybe a bit more,” said Heckathorn. “The (center) isn’t our only source for new kids each year, but we won’t know that number until a few weeks into school.”

The number of people trying to enroll their children at the center Monday led to long lines and even longer waiting times, according to some parents.

“It was very busy, and things seemed to be moving slowly,” said Brittany Adamson, of Killeen. “I decided to leave and try to come back another time.”

Theresa Smith, another Killeen parent, said she waited for about an hour at the center before deciding to leave.

“This is the third time I have had to enroll a child, but I don’t remember it taking that long before,” she said. “You just had to decide if you wanted to stick around, or try your luck another time.”

The crowds at the center come as the district expects yet another year of growth in enrollment for the upcoming school year.

Last year, the district saw a peak enrollment of 41,969 students. Estimates released in March projected a 430-student increase for the 2013-2014 school year.

The district has taken a number of measures to cope with growth in enrollment, including changing attendance zones for Saegert, Timber Ridge and Mountain View elementary schools, as well as Liberty Hill and Union Grove middle schools. The district also continues moving forward with plans to expand facilities at Mountain View Elementary School.

The district is moving forward with the construction of a 33rd elementary school. The school also will accommodate future growth in enrollment, and is tentatively slated for completion in July 2014.
