The Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday to discuss a bond issue that could bring more than $420 million in improvements to the local school district.

The KISD board must vote to call the May 5 bond election prior to a Feb. 16 deadline. The school board will discuss the issue and possibly vote on it Tuesday.

A backup meeting is scheduled for Thursday in case a decision is not made Tuesday. The board will not meet Thursday if a decision is made beforehand.

The board must decide by Friday if it wants to put a bond issue on the May 5 ballot.

In other business, the proposed design for a 35th elementary school is expected to be approved by the board. Planned to be built on Morganite Lane in Killeen at a cost of $37.1 million, it is scheduled to open for the 2019-2020 school year. This school would be funded by existing district funds, and not the proposed $426 million bond.

Twenty high school seniors scheduled to graduate from Killeen ISD schools this spring will share $71,000 in college scholarships under a plan set for approval by the school board Tuesday. The money comes from Killeen ISD college fund endowments which include the historic Parrie Haynes endowment, established 61 years ago in the name of the famed central Texas cattle rancher.

Other items include a possible approval of the memorandum of understanding with the Temple College Texas Bioscience Institute for the 2018-2019 school year. Temple College has offered STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — programming to high school students from KISD.

The school board opens in public session at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the district administration building, 200 N. WS Young Drive.
