The Killeen Independent School District will name its 33rd elementary school Joseph A. Fowler Elementary School — a homage to the elementary school set to close in May.
The district's board of trustees voted 6-0 on the name during its monthly workshop meeting this morning. Susan Jones wasn't present at the meeting.
The new school will open in the 2014-2015 school year, and much of the old Fowler Elementary School's staff will move to the new location.
Board members said the closing school's staff expressed interest in wanting the new school named after it.
The board had more than 50 names of community members, past and present, to choose from as they decided what to name the district's 33rd elementary school.
“We are fortunate that we live in a community where there are so many different possibilities for what to name the school,” said Corbett Lawler, a board member. “I didn’t know Joe Fowler, but people that knew him speak very highly of him and describe the thousands of different ways he contributed to this community. Our predecessors thought enough of the man to name a school after him. I think it’s incumbent on us to continue to respect their decision (and name the new school Fowler).”
