Members of Central Texas College’s Enactus organization met in Copperas Cove Saturday night to work on yet another project aimed at helping a local business bring in more customers.

Enactus, formerly known as Students In Free Enterprise, members met at the Fins and Flowers Pet Shop in Copperas Cove, ready to spend most of the night and this morning painting the store’s roof as part of the club’s Operation Step Up program.

David Netherwood, the organization’s vice president, said Operation Step Up allows members of Enactus to work with a local business to identify its strengths, and help solidify and expand its customer base. That could mean anything from improving marketing materials and social media presence to adding product lines or revamping the look of the store itself, as the members were doing Saturday night.

“We listen and try and figure out what the needs of these businesses are, and work with them to achieve their goals,” Netherwood said.

In the case of Fins and Flowers, the students will be helping new owner Amanda Vaughn with a complete overhaul. In addition to cosmetic changes, the group will work to expand the store’s inventory and products, even giving the shop a new name: Out of The Cage Pet Shop.

“We want to bring (the store) into the 21st century,” said Vaughn, who took over the store in February. “(Enactus) has been a great help with that.”

This is the second business the organization has worked with this year. Enactus helped another Cove-based business, Michele’s Floral and Gifts, open a kiosk inside the Clear Creek Main Exchange at Fort Hood.

Netherwood said the organization and Vaughn hope to complete most of their work and hold a grand reopening for the store in late November or early December.

For future projects, Netherwood and Enactus secretary Charlene Spencer said they may expand Operation Step Up to businesses in Killeen or Harker Heights.
