HARKER HEIGHTS — Choir students at Harker Heights High School are ready for their biggest performance of the year — the school’s annual Knight Club concert today and Saturday.

Now entering its 13th year, the performance will showcase about 60 of the school’s choir students performing contemporary rock, rhythm and blues and pop songs with a live band, light show and elaborate sets to raise money for the Harker Heights High School Choir booster club.

“It’s music that everybody knows,” said Tommy Haygood, the school’s choir director. “This is the same experiences you’d get at a rock concert, but on a slightly smaller scale.”

That experience gets bigger and bigger every year, Haygood said. This year’s show will feature 40 acts, which are created by the students themselves. The students have to audition their acts before they can be put in the show. Haygood said this year more than 600 acts auditioned for the show.

“You almost prepare for it year-round, and most (students) start working on their acts very early,” said Suzanna Brown, a Harker Heights senior.

This will be Brown’s third and final year performing in the show. She will be in 10 of the concert’s acts.

“It’s a great experience to have for my senior year,” she said.

Haygood said last year’s concert raised about $16,000, a number he thought might be topped this year. Aside from raising money, he said the event helps students build character.

“These are a group of highly motivated students,” he said. “They gain a sense of poise and confidence that they just can’t get anywhere else.”
