Students at Shoemaker High School were encouraged to look to the future and consider career goals at the school’s second annual job fair Friday.

Held in Shoemaker’s cafeteria, 33 local businesses and community organizations were invited to set up tables and give information and advice to students about potential careers.

“We want to expose our students to what’s out there in terms of jobs, and get them to meet some of the people in our community,” said Dawn Richardson, Shoemaker’s student activities coordinator. “The goal is to get them to start thinking about their future, and set goals for what they want to do.”

Businesses at the event included Fort Hood National Bank, Chisolm’s Family Funeral Home, the Killeen Fire Department and Scott & White Healthcare. Community organizations present at the event included the Killeen Branch of the NAACP, Central Texas College’s Students in Free Enterprise and representatives from the district’s newly opened Career Center.

“We are here to talk to them about the future; sort of plant a seed,” said Rodney Venable, a human resources representative at Scott & White. “We can talk to them one-on-one and let them know what classes they can take now, and in college, if they are looking at a career with us.”

Brittany George, a ninth-grade student at Shoemaker, said she found the job fair helpful.

“It’s good to be able to look around, and find out what you should be doing if you want to have a particular job,” she said. “You can ask what classes you should be taking so you can achieve your goals.”

Even though a career is years away, George said it is important to begin thinking of her future early.

“I think it’s a good idea to start thinking about what you want to do,” she said. “You need to start now so you’ll be prepared for the future.”
