Saturday is the deadline for graduating high school seniors, college students and college-bound adults to apply for the League of United Latin American Citizens Council 4535 annual scholarship.
LULAC Council 4535 plans to award $1,000 to about 10 students for this year’s scholarship program, said Raúl Villaronga, president of LULAC 4535.
Since 2002, LULAC 4535 has awarded scholarships worth more than $100,000 to students in the Killeen-Fort Hood area.
Villaronga said the annual program has attracted as many as 54 applicants in the past; this year, he expects the process to again be competitive.
“There’s more people looking for scholarships out there than there is money and, with the economy as it is, it will be even worse,” Villaronga said. “But you are not eligible if you don’t apply.”
Applications must be postmarked by Saturday.
Graduating seniors from the Killeen and Copperas Cove Independent School districts or college students currently enrolled at Central Texas College or Texas A&M University-Central Texas are eligible.
Adults can apply under the Adult Continuing Education Scholarship. CEP students cannot be currently enrolled in college but plan to return to college in the 2013-14 school year.
“It is not limited to, and it never has been limited to, Hispanics,” Villaronga said. “We look at the need and the potential of the individual to complete the scholastic.”
After applications are received, members of LULAC 4535 will review the individual cases and conduct interviews.
“The interview is going to be the biggest factor in the application process,” Villaronga said.
