NEWS ALERT

A substitute teacher at Maxdale Elementary School in Killeen placed duct tape over the mouths of 10 fifth-grade students Thursday, according to a news release from the Killeen Independent School District.

Three other students put duct tape over their own mouths as a result of the substitute teacher’s actions, the release said.

As soon as school leaders learned of the incident, all 13 students were taken to the school nurse for observation and treatment. The students were uninjured and returned to class, the release said.

The substitute teacher, whose name was not released, was immediately removed from the classroom and barred from the campus.

The school notified Child Protective Services following the incident.

Carmello Brooks was one of the fifth-grade students whose mouth was allegedly covered with duct tape. When he ripped it off, the substitute put another strip over his mouth, according to his mother, Adaeze Akudolu.

Carmello also told his mother the tape was on the students' mouths for at least 15 minutes.

The dangers of duct tape are minimal, but can include suffocation or damage to the skin, according to various websites.

According to the KISD news release, the principal at Maxdale informed parents of the incident.

You need to fix the headline. It sounds like a regular teacher at Maxdale did it. It was a SUBSTITUTE TEACHER! And that sub needs to be named so other schools won't get that same sub.

Not released probably because investigation is undergoing, not guilty until proven otherwise by an investigation, right now is allegations.
