League of United Latin American Citizens Council 4535 will award $12,000 in scholarships Saturday during a ceremony at Fort Hood.

“After distributing the scholarship applications to local high schools, we received 37 total applications for scholarships coming from seniors currently enrolled in the Killeen and Copperas Cove Independent School districts’ high schools,” said Raul G. Villaronga, LULAC Council 4535 president.

LULAC interviewed students at area schools last week.

Two additional scholarships for students seeking a career in medicine were funded by Metroplex Health Systems.

Scholarship recipients from Central Texas College and Texas A&M University-Central Texas also were selected.

“Although (we) planned to award 10 $1,000 scholarships, LULAC Council 4535 received gifts or pledges amounting to $12,000, so we decided to award two additional scholarships,” Villaronga said in a statement.

Shoemaker High School, with 19 applicants, received four scholarships; Copperas Cove High School, with nine applicants, received two scholarships; Killeen’s Pathways Campus, received two scholarships, one coming from the Metroplex scholarships.

Killeen High School and Ellison High School each received one scholarship. No applications were submitted from Harker Heights High School.

Retired Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch is the guest speaker at Saturday’s banquet at the Fort Hood Phantom Warrior Club. Tickets are $35 per person or $300 for a table of 10.
