Students in Shana Simms third grade class at Haynes Elementary School read a portion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech on Friday.

With students having a day off school Monday in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Killeen’s Haynes Elementary third-grade teacher Shana Simms decided to teach her class about the Civil Rights leader on Friday.

The students watched an animated film about King, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. They worked as groups to learn vocabulary words associated with the Civil Rights Movement, and recited excerpts as a class from King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which he gave during the March on Washington in 1963.
