Students get the chance to show off their creative side this week at the Killeen Independent School District’s 10th annual visual art show.

More than a 1,000 entries from students in the high schools, middle schools and some elementary schools are on display at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center as part of the show. On Monday, students from the district’s schools began touring the museum-style exhibit.

“They are very excited to come in and see everything,” said Phyllis King, a docent for the center. “They want to see their art, and see what their classmates have made.”

This year’s show includes paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, woodworking and computer-generated art.

“We have some very creative students,” said Shelia Donahue, the district’s fine arts director. “(The exhibit) is a celebration of the creative efforts of all of the district’s children.”

Donahue said the show offered students a chance to express themselves.

“Visual art is a great avenue for them to learn to express themselves,” she said.

Bryson Jones, an eighth-grade student at Charles Patterson Middle School, agreed. Jones, who entered a sculpture in the show, said he has always been interested in art and jumped at the chance to take it as an elective in school.

“It’s fun,” Jones said. “You really get a chance to express yourself and do something you like.”

Brianna Joseph, another Patterson eighth-grader, said art offered her the chance to relax and be creative during the school day.

“I really enjoy it,” she said. “You get to have experience and learn new (art) techniques. I look forward to it.”
