An explosion at a rocket testing site in McLennan County was heard nearly 20 miles away in Gatesville on Tuesday night.
The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the explosion at the SpaceX testing site near McGregor.
“Anyone that heard the loud boom and felt a rumble outside of McGregor can rest easy,” stated the sheriff’s office on its Facebook site. “Sources are saying no one was injured.”
The explosion was two nitrogen-filled tanks that over-pressurized and ruptured at SpaceX in McGregor, according to the sheriff’s office.
Residents in Gatesville, about 20 miles west of McGregor, heard the blast around 10:30 p.m.
“I was lying in bed, and then I heard a big boom-boom. And then the windows shook,” said Kelli Patterson, a Gatesville resident.
Patterson said she thought the sound was military training at Fort Hood, which is common at North Fort Hood.
Calls and emails to SpaceX were not returned.
