COPPERAS COVE — Filing for the Nov. 5 local elections ended Monday with positions contested in the Copperas Cove Independent School District and the city.

With less than four hours left to file for the election, Jeff Gorres, 46, completed an application for Cove ISD’s Board of Trustees Place 5. He will take on incumbent Doug Cook, 75, who has served on the board since 2010.

The municipal elections have two contested seats.

Former City Councilman Charlie D. Youngs, 71, who left the government body in July 2012 after his wife was diagnosed with brain cancer, filed to taken on incumbent Gary Kent, 48. Youngs filed with 15 minutes to spare Monday.

Kent is serving in Place 3.

Former Chamber of Commerce President Marty Smith, 67, and former Leader-Press editor Azetia “Z” Taylor, 42, also will battle for votes for the Place 4 council seat.

The seat is held by Danny Palmer, who has been on the council since March 2009 and is ineligible to run again.

Councilmen Kenn Smith, 81, and Place 5 representative, will run uncontested in the election.

Early voting will begin in late October.
