An early morning fire displaced residents at a substance abuse rehabilitation center in downtown Killeen on Monday.

Killeen firefighters were called to the Word of Life Spiritual Growth Center in the 400 block of North Gray Street in downtown Killeen about 9 a.m. Monday.

The treatment facility began in 2003 and is affiliated with the Rivers of Living Waters church. According to the building’s owner, Bishop Darryl Shaw, the center can house up to 26 residents.

No one was injured in the fire, but officials from the Killeen Fire Department said seven residents of the building were displaced. The department would not comment on the cause of the fire, because it was still under investigation.

Shaw said the fire occurred in the building’s pantry, and the cause may have been electrical in nature. Shaw also said the displaced residents were being relocated while the damage was repaired.

“We hope to be back in business by tomorrow or Wednesday,” Shaw said Monday.

Too bad to hear that. It is summer and we feel the heat of the sun. We really need to take precautions and prevent fire.
