COPPERAS COVE — Firefighters battled a late-night blaze Tuesday and early Wednesday that left a Goodwill retail store in shambles but caused no injuries.

The fire was reported at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, said Deputy Fire Chief Gary Young. Shortly after firefighters arrived on scene, the roof collapsed as the building was engulfed in flames.

It took about 90 minutes for the responding units — three fire engines, a ladder truck, two ambulances and command vehicles — to bring the fire under control, Young said.

“The fire was so extensive that the firefighting efforts were directed toward containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to an adjacent storage building and convenience store,” stated a news release from the Copperas Cove Fire Department. “Due to those efforts, those adjacent buildings were never threatened.”

Firefighters continued to battle hot spots until after 6 a.m. Wednesday, said Deputy Fire Chief Mike Ramminger.

When the building’s roof collapsed, it trapped the fire underneath it. As portions of the roof were removed, the fire flared because oxygen was hitting hot spots.

Heart of Texas Goodwill Industries didn’t know the extent of lost property Wednesday afternoon, but representatives were on scene evaluating the incident, said Christina Taylor, marketing and communication manager for the Waco- and Harker Heights-based nonprofit.

“No one was there and no one was hurt, and that is definitely what we were worried about,” Taylor said.

The Copperas Cove store did “very well” for the organization and had seen increases in sales over the past year, she said.

The Copperas Cove Fire Marshal’s Office spent most of Wednesday investigating the fire, but the cause was unknown at 5 p.m.

According to a news release, the city requested mutual aid assistance from the Killeen Fire Department’s Fire Marshal Office to assist with the investigation.
