School board members in Florence are looking for a new person to lead the district’s three schools.
“They hope to name a new superintendent by the end of March,” said Sam Atwood, interim superintendent for the Florence Independent School District.
Atwood, a Bastrop resident and former school superintendent, began the interim job earlier this month. Florence is about 20 miles south of Killeen.
Atwood replaced former Superintendent Karla Moyer, who left the district in December to take a new job at the Region 13 Education Service Center in Austin.
Moyer is now the senior coordinator for human resources at Region 13, a public institution that supports school districts and acts as a liaison between the Texas Education Agency and school systems.
The school board began planning to hire a new replacement in November. The board reviewed community involvement sessions and a qualifications report in December. The deadline to receive applications for the district’s top position was Jan. 15.
Board members began reviewing applications this week, and initial interviews are scheduled to start Feb. 11, according to a “superintendent search time line” provided by the district.
Finalists will be named by March 5. A vote to hire a new superintendent is scheduled for March 28. It could be weeks or more after that before the new superintendent reports to the district.
The district is home to about 980 students and three schools: Florence High, Florence Middle and Florence Elementary.
Moyer was superintendent for four years.
