Gateway High School will continue classes as normal today at its campus despite fire destroying the Killeen school’s neighboring middle school facility on Saturday.
“The Gateway Middle School facility will not be operational in the foreseeable future,” said Leslie Gilmore, Killeen Independent School District spokesperson, Sunday in a statement at the school’s parking lot.
Starting today, classes for middle school students will be conducted at the old KISD Center/Pathways complex at 3004 Atkinson Ave., Gilmore said. Stops for students who ride buses will be at their usual times, with buses dropping off and picking up students at the new location on Atkinson.
Students can be dropped off or walk to the Gateway campus as normal; a bus will transport them to and from the new location at the start and end of the school day, Gilmore said. Parents also may drop off and pick up their children at the new location.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided as usual.
The fire was reported at 3:42 p.m. at the alternative school, located in the 1300 block of Gowen Drive. It took local police and fire departments about two hours to contain. The middle school and offices were destroyed, and other buildings sustained fire, smoke and water damage.
No students, staff or first responders were injured during the fire.
The cause has not been determined, said Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith. The Killeen Fire Department continues to investigate.
