COPPERAS COVE — This morning, Gov. Rick Perry will be available for a meet-and-greet event at the Copperas Cove Public Library, along with District 59 Rep. Sid Miller.
The Fort Hood Area Association of Realtors is hosting the event, in which Perry will be available to visit with residents about issues they feel are important.
"It's a chance for them to ask about his tax compact and get information on what's going on in their district," said Michael DeHart, executive officer of FHAAR. "Basically it's just a mini town hall. You get to meet the governor and that doesn't happen too often here in Central Texas."
Information on the Governor's Budget Compact can be found at governor.state.tx.us/initiatives/txbudgetcompact.
Perry will be available for about an hour starting at 10:30 a.m. before departing as he holds similar events across the state.
Members of the area Realtors group "are ardent supporters of property owner's rights," read a news release on the event. "We encourage the public to come ... and meet with the governor and Rep. Miller."
DeHart said the association likes to keep property tax rates low, and has helped shape imminent domain rules in the state.
"If you pay property taxes, you want to know what's going to be said. You want to know these things," said DeHart. "It's going to affect you."
DeHart said money would be a "huge" issue in the coming legislative session, concerning funding of everything from highways to education.
"There's only so much money available," he said.
"If you're a registered voter, you should absolutely 100 percent be there," said DeHart. "It's a golden opportunity to meet the governor, let him hear what you have to say and hear what he has to say."
