COPPERAS COVE — The new H-E-B Plus store will open at 6 a.m. Friday, with a ribbon-cutting scheduled for 8 a.m.

The grand opening will include a complimentary breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m., a performance by the Central Texas College Instrumental Ensemble and a birthday celebration for Copperas Cove Mayor John Hull, who turns 80 on that day, H-E-B woman Tamra Jones said Tuesday.

“We’re expecting a lot of fanfare,” Jones said. “We’ve been hearing so much from the community and the city and the chamber (of commerce). They’re excited and ready for a new store to open.”

H-E-B representatives will present gifts to the local Meals on Wheels, Boys & Girls Club and YMCA branches.

“At H-E-B, we view each store opening as an opportunity to give back to the community,” Jeff Thomas, H-E-B vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “This donation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to Copperas Cove and a celebration of a bright future together.”

The store features an expanded selection, new departments and new services. It is about three times the size of the current Cove H-E-B and has features not found at the Killeen H-E-B Plus, including Cafe Your Way, where customers may purchase Flaming Bird lunch combos; a dining area with WiFi; and a Texas Backyard department.

“It’s a newer department for H-E-B and certainly the store,” Jones said. “There’s much more room to showcase fresh plants, flowers, outdoor furniture and other accessories.”

The new store has electronics, entertainment and mobile service setup departments.

The opening of the new store is exciting for the developers of the Five Hills shopping center, of which H-E-B is the anchor.

“It means we’ve got an active shopping center,” said Daniel Campbell, development associate with Austin-based Endeavor Real Estate, the company in charge of developing the Five Hills property.

“We’ve leased spaces to AT&T and several other retail-type tenants,” including a barber, an eye doctor, a dentist and a bank, Campbell said. “We have about 60 percent of that space leased. The first of those tenants will start to open in the next four to five months.”

Not to be a negative nancy, but I'm not at all excited about AT&T, another dentist/bank/eyedoctor. We have all of them and a Walmart right next to this new HEB (though I am excited about having an alternative to shopping there.)

How about attracting a pet store? An office supply store? A dedicated housewares store? A World Market? A Whole Foods? I'd darn near sell a kidney for a Whole Foods closer than the Austin 'burbs.

A I still make MANY, MANY trips into Killeen and Harker Heights and beyond to spend my money there for things I simply can not get in Cove. I'd much rather my tax dollars go to the town I live in, but the whole "Find it In Cove, Buy it in Cove" thing is still far from a reality for me and many others.
