HARKER HEIGHTS - Plans are moving ahead for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Seton Medical Center Harker Heights.

The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 4 at the build site on Central Texas Expressway.

The project, to be located just east of the Rosewood Retirement Community, is a joint venture between LHP Hospital Group and Seton Family of Hospitals.

According to LHP spokeswoman Pat Ball, 1,000 invitations to the groundbreaking were sent out last week.

Also last week, LHP announced the general contractor for the project - Layton Construction Company of Sandy, Utah.

The name of the new chief executive officer hired for the facility will be announced during the groundbreaking, Ball said.

LHP will manage the day-to-day operations of the hospital, while Seton will manage the care contracts within the market, Thomas Gallagher, Seton Family Hospitals' senior vice president of business development, previously told the Herald.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with LHP again in the construction of the Seton Medical Center Harker Heights facility," said Bob McGuire, vice president of Layton Construction. "The trust and collaboration we've developed over the past 24 months in our first project with LHP at Portneuf Medical Center has been remarkable. We look forward to repeating the experience at Seton Medical Center."

The facility, which will be constructed on 22 acres, will be a 191,400-square-foot, 83-bed facility with 24-7 emergency care; women's services; obstetrics; cardiology; surgery; oncology; neurosurgery; orthopedics; imaging and diagnostic services; general medical and surgical services; and intensive and critical care.

The hospital's campus also will feature a 60,000-square-foot medical office building.

Services provided at the office building will include family practice, internal medicine, cardiology, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, gastroenterology, otolaryngology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, rheumatology and urology.

LHP began plans to begin building the facility in June.

Completion is expected in the third quarter of 2012.
