COPPERAS COVE — As construction continues on the H-E-B Plus store, its anticipated completion date in February will give opportunity to both the grocery chain and residents.
“We are very excited to make this investment for our Copperas Cove community,” said Ed Page, director of store operations for the company.
The current H-E-B was built in 1995 on a smaller format, said Tamra Jones, a spokeswoman for the organization.
It is about 36,000 square feet, while the new location, almost two miles east of the current store, will be more than 100,000 square feet.
Jones said it was too early to say what new features the larger facility will bring to the area, but it will allow the company to provide a wider selection of products to its customers.
“All the departments are going to be expanding,” she said. “If you are familiar with our plus stores, we do have some additional options within those stores. Those are additional departments within departments.”
While there will certainly be more seasonal items as well as groceries, the details will be decided based on hearing from customers what type of products they want the store to carry, Jones said.
In Belton, the company finished a move to the new plus format in November, where a more than 100,000-square-foot building replaced a 40,000-square-foot store.
“We think it provided a significant shopping opportunity in central Bell County,” said Belton City Manager Sam Listi, about the H-E-B Plus opening. “Certainly, overall sales taxes are up, and I think we are seeing some positive benefits from the regional H-E-B Plus.”
The store has provided several additional retail offerings in the community, he said.
As the store comes online in Copperas Cove, the current H-E-B will be shut down.
“Eventually it will close,” Jones said. “We will retain our employees and they will be transferring to the new facility.”
The larger store also will need new employees, she said, but hiring won’t begin until construction nears completion.
