HARKER HEIGHTS — Elena Rivera and Monica Tuitasi know what it feels like to be hungry and to need help getting back on their feet.

Rivera, general manager of Pizza Hut, and Tuitasi, owner of Let’s Party in Killeen, partnered to throw a carnival benefitting World Hunger Relief at Carl Levin Park on Saturday.

According to its website, WFP is the United Nations frontline agency mandated to combat global hunger, which afflicts one out of every seven people on Earth.

“‘Sharing a Slice of Hope,’ is something that Pizza Hut does every year and last year, nationwide, we were able to provide 8 million meals which translates into $2 million,” Rivera said. “It’s been more difficult this year because what’s been going on with the government, but people don’t need to give a lot. Just $1 can feed four kids for a week and $5 feeds them for a month.”

Growing up in foster care and facing hunger was the uniting factor that brought Rivera and Tuitasi together to put on this event, which they hope to make an annual happening.

“I don’t want my kids to go through what I went through, so this is my opportunity to give back,” Tuitasi said.

The event featured carnival-style games, a three-on-three basketball game, bounce houses and other family fun for a cause.

“Little by little, dollar by dollar, we can make sure no one goes hungry,” Rivera said. “If we all come together, we can make things better.”

Pizza Hut patrons can make a donation while they dine through Saturday or at WFP.org.
