HARKER HEIGHTS - Local residents can soon expect to see some changes to speed limits and neighborhood intersections.
At Tuesday's meeting, the City Council unanimously approved lowering the speed limit by 5 mph in two sections of Farm-to-Market 2410 between the Killeen line and the U.S. Highway 190 east frontage road.
"A resident came forward saying the speed was too great," said Mark Hyde, director of public works. The city conducted a traffic and engineering study with the Texas Department of Transportation that supported the reduction in the speed limit.
Six neighborhood intersections will get stop signs in place of their current yield signs based on suggestions from area residents, patrol officers and the city's signs department.
"These (stop signs) are in neighborhoods that have grown up over the years," said Harker Heights Police Chief Mike Gentry. Two of the intersections are Broken Arrow Drive and Pawnee Drive and Fox Trail and Frontier Trail.
The stop sign amendment also included no parking signs for Miller's Drive near Carl Levin Park. Hyde said three signs will be placed on the street and curbs painted to keep people from parking too close to the stop sign, which has resulted in accidents.
The council also approved an agreement with TxDOT for the inspection of construction materials for the east-to-west turnaround bridge planned at U.S. Highway 190 and FM 2410. The contract will pay for inspectors to observe the off-site fabrication of the bridge's structural materials.
Hyde said a start date for the tunaround construction project might get set after the next pre-construction meeting on June 12.
In other matters, the council approved guidelines for the city-wide garage sale, scheduled for Aug. 4, and Councilman Pat Christ was elected mayor pro tem.
The council also re-appointed Judge Billy Ray Hall Jr. as alternate municipal judge until June 2014 with a pay adjustment.
