HARKER HEIGHTS — Trading in musical instruments for race bibs, the Harker Heights High School Red Brigade Band Boosters hosted their first Band on the Run 5k fundraiser Saturday morning to fund expenses for the band’s new equipment trailer.

“I really like to support my band family,” said Ashley Hanrahan, a Harker Heights High School sophomore and band member about participating in the race. “It’s a good bonding experience.”

More than 150 racers lined up at the staring line in front of Harker Heights High School to complete the timed, 3.5-mile course.

Pro-Fit Event Services LLC provided the race timing and results.

A drum line at the finish line motivated runners to finish strong.

The 5k raised $3,200, and now the group is just $4,000 shy of its $9,000 goal to maintain and customize the outside of the semitrailer.

Kristl Evans, fundraiser chairwoman for the booster board, came up with the idea of doing a 5k as a way to help boost the band’s confidence while also raising the necessary funds.

“When we would go to events, all the other school bands would drive up in their brand new semis and we had to rent a box truck,” she said. “It’s a pride thing, so now when we roll up to a competition, it will give us a presence and give the kids a reason to be proud of the commitment they make.”

Through various donations and fundraisers, Evans said the Heights band board members were able to purchase the $5,600 semi, and she hopes to make the 5k an annual event.

“Having the one trailer versus the two or three box trucks we had to rent will definitely streamline our loading process,” said David Norris, band director. “Being able to customize the outside will definitely increase our level of Knights’ pride.”
