HARKER HEIGHTS - The Animal Advisory Board on Thursday endorsed a volunteer application, volunteer orientation procedures and the future Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center's hours.

The new animal shelter on the corner of Clore Road and Indian Trail could be open as early as Oct. 29, Police Chief Mike Gentry said during an Animal Advisory Board meeting Thursday.

The city is planning to ask for volunteers to help maintain and operate the facility, officially called the Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center, and it is planning to operate the facility seven days a week, Gentry said.

The board endorsed adoption hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays and Mondays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

"I think with these hours we will be able to boost our adoption rate," Animal Control Officer Albert Musgrove said during the meeting.

The hours will place the Heights facility open later than the city of Killeen and Second Chance animal shelters, he said.

The volunteer application also endorsed by the board is a document similar to that used by the Parks and Recreation Department and will soon be used by the public library as well, said Harker Heights police Lt. Loretta Fox.

Volunteers must agree to submit to a background check, observe all staff rules and police policies and procedures, act courteously to patrons and employees, positively represent the city, accept the guidance and decision of the animal control staff and more, according to the document.

The orientation document discussed some of the volunteers' duties.

They include attending to guests and visitors seeking adoption; assisting with adoptions; walking, feeding, grooming and talking to the animals; and cleaning dog pens, litter boxes, cat cages.

Board chairman George Grammas said the endorsement would not make the drafted documents final because the city could change them in the future. Grammas asked members to submit any changes they could think of to him or Gentry.
