HARKER HEIGHTS — The Planning and Zoning Commission on Wednesday unanimously recommended allowing the replacement of aging mobile homes with new units, which could be presented to City Council members Tuesday for approval.
At the Wednesday meeting, Jim Scholz, a Harker Heights city planner, asked commissioners to consider the poor condition of current units before voting.
Officials began a new round of debates on the city’s mobile home parks in February, when Country Squire and Indian Trail Mobile Home Park owner Kip Lewis told the council his intent to rehabilitate his 40-year-old mobile home park.
A city ordinance requiring twice the spacing between newly installed mobile homes than what currently exists would force Lewis to take two houses out to put one in, said Planning and Development Director Fred Morris.
If the council approves the commission’s recommendation, Lewis could then apply for a planned development permit, which could exempt him from mobile home park regulations, allow tighter spacing between units and provide economic viability.
“It allows us to move forward to present our plan, which is all good for everybody,” Lewis said. “The mobile home parks that want to step up and make the appropriate changes to improve their properties will do it.”
