HARKER HEIGHTS — Standing alongside developers Chris Doose and Shawn Easley, Harker Heights Mayor Mike Aycock on Thursday cut the ribbon in front of the new Verna Lee Townhomes, signaling a new addition to the Heights housing market.

While the homes — the first Harker Heights townhouses built in more than 20 years — have garnered prolific interest, none has sold yet, said RE/MAX listing agent Johnny Vacca. But qualified applicants should be homeowners within a month.

“We’re very close,” Vacca said. “We’re just trying to get some more people approved.”

Doose and Easley, owners of Flintrock Custom Homes, have developed four of 16 planned homes adjacent to Verna Lee Boulevard and Ashwood Street. Builders will construct the next four after selling the existing ones. Vacca said the timetable for completion depends on how quickly the homes sell.

Prices for the two-story, 1,570-square-foot homes range from $128,500 to $138,000, Doose said, with the difference between the price points being stainless steel appliances, ceiling surround sound, a refrigerator and quartz countertops, among other features.

“We wanted to do something that was efficient and modern,” said architect Matt Weigers.

Townhouses need less yard upkeep, and entail sharing utility lines, leaving a smaller environmental footprint than single-family homes.

Doose said he developed the homes on the city’s interior, rather than the outskirts, to reduce the strain on the city infrastructure.

“We wanted to find land that had water and sewer,” he said.

Aycock expressed support for Doose’s product.

“I think the timing’s right for this product in the market,” he said.

Sponsored by the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce, the ribbon-cutting event drew about 50 people between 3 and 4 p.m. It lasted until 8 p.m., drawing local officials, residents and prospective homebuyers.
