HARKER HEIGHTS — Residents shouldn’t notice any changes in their water and wastewater service, as the City Council on Tuesday approved the purchase of two Public Works Department pickup trucks totaling $71,595.

A 1½-ton crane truck and a half-ton truck used for meter reading will replace two older vehicles, said Public Works Director Mark Hyde. The crane truck pumps water and removes wastewater from sewage systems.

The city will pay Philpott Motors in Port Neches $34,848 for the bigger truck, and will pay Stanley Ford in McGregor $16,978.60 for the smaller one.

During the half-hour meeting, the council also approved the purchase of a $19,769 half-ton extended cab truck for the Parks and Recreation Department. City documents stated that Johnson Brothers Ford in Temple will deliver it within 70 days.

Other action

In other business, Mayor Mike Aycock and Councilman Pat Christ recognized three Harker Heights High School graduates who founded Knights of the Round Table, a group in which students and city officials collaborate to organize local events.

Aycock presented certificates and City of Harker Heights coins to Alyson Mullins, Kristen Mellberg and Zack Snider.

“Their enthusiasm, their imagination, their ability to just come up with new and great ideas and to get things going have started this group,” Christ said. “We hope (it) will continue over the years to become a good community relationship between the high school and the city of Harker Heights.”
