HARKER HEIGHTS — The Comanche Gap Historical Park project took one step closer to becoming reality Tuesday when the City Council authorized City Manager Steve Carpenter to negotiate a $13,000 contract with Luck Design Team to develop a master plan for the 19-acre piece of property on Comanche Gap Road.
Carpenter said the master plan is the second step in the park project. Purchasing the property was the first step. “Securing the land was first, but the second is getting a plan of action on how we’re going to develop it, and down the road, how we’re going to fund it in future years.”
The city bought the land in May from the family of Bill Alford, who operated a historical amusement park there in the 1960s and ’70s. Most recently, it has been home to the annual Medicine Man awards ceremony.
The site is recognized by the Texas Historical Commission as the place where Comanche Indians abandoned two little girls they had kidnapped in a raid on settlers in 1859.
The historical marker was stolen at some point in the past, but the city has ordered a new one, Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Bark said. “We’ll secure it until the master plan is complete and then we’ll find a new home on the piece of property for that marker.”
Luck Design Team, an Austin park planning and landscape architecture services firm, designed other projects for the city, including Harker Heights Community Park, Purser Family Park and the new Goode-Connell Park.
Funding for the design services is included in the 2012-13 city budget, Bark said.
