The Killeen Daily Herald garnered 16 awards — including second place for Newspaper of the Year in Class AA — at the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors’ annual conference, which concluded Sunday in San Antonio.
In the last four years, the Herald has earned three second-place awards in the Newspaper of the Year category, as well as first-place honors in last year’s judging.
Class AA includes Texas daily newspapers with Sunday circulations between 10,000 and 29,999.
Judges from the Daytona Beach (Fla.) News Journal described the Herald as “a nice-sized paper with many sections, zoned editions, lots of local stories, community news and local editorials.”
One judge, News-Journal Managing Editor Cory Lancaster, singled out the Nov. 4, 2012, edition submitted by the Herald’s editors, praising the news feature package and editorial that focused on Fort Hood, three years after the Nov. 5, 2009, shootings on post.
The Herald also received six first-place awards during the weekend conference.
Herald reporter Phil Jankowski received first-place honors in the short features category for his article chronicling a graveside memorial for a slain Killeen teenager.
Sportswriter Kevin Posival won first place in the breaking sports news category for his coverage of the shocking slaying of former Killeen High School football standout Dino Cannon.
Sportswriter Alex Byington received first-place honors in the sports features category for his account of an Ellison girls basketball player’s struggle to move on after the loss of her mother.
Herald sports editors Nick Talbot and Mark Miller also won first-place honors — Talbot for sports column writing and Miller for headlines.
Former military editor Colleen Flaherty garnered a first-place award in the category of specialty reporting for a series of three articles on topics of military interest.
