FORT HOOD The military on Friday announced that III Corps soldiers assigned to the 13th Corps Support Command and the 4th Infantry Division have received orders to return to the war front.
They will be joined in early fall by Delta Detachment, 230th Finance Battalion, a Fort Hood news release stated.
Deployment orders were received by the support commands Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 180th Transportation Battalion; 664th Ordnance Company; 74th Engineer Company, 13th Corps Support Command; and Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 64th Combat Support Group
The numbers of troops deploying, specific times and dates of deployment, and specific destinations will not be announced at this time for operational security reasons, the release stated. III Corps officials will not speculate on future employment of forces.
The support commands troops were among the first to leave Fort Hood in January 2003 for Iraq and were part of the U.S.-led invasion into Baghdad. Those troops returned that summer. The commands headquarters group spent 2004 in Balad, Iraq, heading up the coalitions logistical effort from Camp Anaconda before returning to Fort Hood in December.
Also leaving Fort Hood will be the 4th Infantry. The division received advance word Dec. 14 from the Pentagon that it would be among the major units rotating to Iraq later this year.
The 4th Infantrys troops returned in April 2004 to Fort Hood after spending a year in Iraq patrolling three dangerous provinces north of Baghdad dubbed the Sunni Triangle. The announcement came a day after the 4th Infantry and nation marked the 1st Brigades role in the Dec. 13, 2003, capture of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
Since its return to Fort Hood, the division has been repairing battle-damaged equipment and reorganizing into a lighter, more mobile force under the Armys transformation program. It has added 5,000 troops to its ranks by forming a fourth maneuver brigade and an aviation brigade.
Other units named in the Dec. 14 Defense Department release that will be leaving for Iraq included the 48th Infantry Brigade, Georgia Army National Guard; 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team from Fort Wainwright, Alaska; 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum, N.Y.; the 101st Airborne Division, Air Assault from Fort Campbell, Ky.; and the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley, Kan.
Units going to Afghanistan are the 10th Mountains 3rd and 4th Brigades and headquarters elements and the headquarters of the Florida National Guards 53rd Infantry Brigade.
