Belton police announced an arrest in the city's first homicide in nearly 10 years.

The Bell County District Attorney's Office issued an arrest warrant for Chance DeAllen Keller for the late February shooting death of Stephen Wright, 20.

When Keller was served the warrant on murder charges Thursday, the 25-year-old man was in custody in McLennan County Jail on non-related charges of aggravated robbery, failure to appear and possession of a controlled substance. His bond is set at $1 million.

On Feb. 26, Wright was found dead in the 400 block of West Seventh Avenue in Belton after police received a report of a deceased person on a porch.

A police news report stated that Wright had a single gunshot to his torso.

Belton police Sgt. Larry Berg said authorities connected Keller to the shooting through a shell casing found at the scene. Police matched the shell casing with another one found during the alleged robbery in McLennan County for which Keller also is charged.

In Waco on Feb. 26, Keller was accused of going to a woman's house to try and sell some goods, said Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton.

After the woman refused to buy anything, Keller pulled a gun from his pocket and demanded the woman's purse. The woman threw her purse across a room and then chased Keller from the house with a baseball bat. Keller then fired a single shot, got into a car and fled the scene.
