A judge denied a request for a retrial for a Waco man convicted of capital murder in the February 2012 shooting death of a Belton man.

Chance Deallen Keller, 27, asked for a retrial during a heated hearing Friday after the district attorney’s office received a letter from a fellow inmate indicating he overheard someone else take credit for the murder of Stephen Wright.

Wright, 20, appeared to have been killed in a drug deal gone bad. Police later connected the gun used in the slaying to Keller, who was charged with the crime while he was already in jail for a robbery charge in Waco.

Keller admitted to being at the scene, but blamed another man he said was present. He is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
