BELTON - A 37-year-old Belton man may face life in prison after a grand jury indicted him on drug distribution charges Wednesday.

Johnnie Lynn McQuoid is charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, four grams or more but less than 200 grams. Investigators from the Bell County Organized Crime Unit found more than 8 grams of suspected methamphetamine in McQuoid's home Oct. 20, an arrest affidavit states.

Because of previous convictions for burglary of a habitation in 1998 and use of equipment for anhydrous ammonia in 2004, McQuoid would face a minimum sentence of 25 years if convicted. Anhydrous ammonia is a chemical used to make methamphetamine, Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe said.

Police in the organized crime unit began surveilling McQuoid and his brother, Donald Lynn Nelson, in October. Authorities believed the two were involved in the distribution of methamphetamine, the affidavit states.

Police obtained a search warrant for their home, located in the 2100 block of Audra Lane in Belton, which they executed Oct. 20.

McQuoid cooperated with authorities, leading police to a safe in his bedroom that contained three handguns and 8.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

Nelson, 49, took police to his bedroom. There, police found a black bag containing a digital scale. Inside a compartment of the scale were two bags containing 0.4 grams of a substance that field tested positive as methamphetamine.

The grand jury also indicted Nelson Wednesday on a charge of possession of methamphetamine, less than one gram.

Lynn has been released from Bell County Jail. Nelson remains in the jail on bond set at $25,000.
