The Bell County Retired Seniors Volunteer Program presented a $132,696 check to the Lions Club Park Senior Center on Tuesday to show the value of the hours volunteers worked last year.

The check, which will not be cashed, represents 18,303 volunteer hours worked in 2012 at the minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour.

Ronnie Ault, executive president of the volunteer program, presented the check to Paul Wikoff, local senior council president.

“Volunteers never cease to amaze me,” Ault said. “About the time I think they’ve done it all, someone surprises me by doing more than ever.”

Eighty-six people are currently involved in volunteer work through the organization, Wikoff said.

“I joined this group because it gave me a chance to help someone who might not be able to enjoy life like they should,” he said.

Killeen Mayor Pro Tem Mike Lower read a proclamation about volunteerism on behalf of the city. The senior center celebrates six years of Killeen service on May 10.
