The Greater Killeen Young Professionals will use a schoolyard classic to raise money Saturday for one of Killeen’s oldest parks.

Teams of 10 to 15 players will take to a diamond for the Kickin’ it for the Park kickball tournament, a second annual fundraiser for Stewart Park.

The park is one of Killeen’s oldest neighborhood parks, located on Stewart Street near Rancier Avenue, said Monica Alexander, the tournament’s chairwoman.

“We are raising funds for improvements to it because there are children who play there,” she said.

In the past couple of years, the young professionals provided shaded picnic areas, fresh paint, landscaping and multiple trees during its revitalization efforts for the space, Alexander said.

With a goal of $2,500 for Saturday’s tournament, the group wants to purchase a swing set, she said.

Eight teams are registered but at least two more teams are needed to meet the fundraising goal.

The team entry fee is $250, and “all of the proceeds from this tournament will go directly to improvements at Stewart Park,” according to the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce’s website.

Young professionals running the tournament learn the importance of giving back to the community, Alexander said.

“As young people, we are trying to promote being involved in the community, because there needs to be more young people involved,” she said. “This is what we do for giving back, and this is what we need to do as young professionals.”
