Three large colorful maps used for planning the city’s future development were placed across tables Thursday night at a Killeen City Council workshop meeting aimed to help officials visualize what changes they would like to see represented on the maps.

Council members examined the future land-use map approved in 2010 along with the planning and zoning commission’s proposal for how the map should be altered to complement the city’s predicted growth.

John Sutton, assistant city manager, said the council received a future land-use map and thoroughfare plan from the planning and zoning commission about a month ago, but they weren’t satisfied with it. The council requested that special meetings be held to rework both plans. After the plans are amended, they will go back to planning and zoning and then before the council again for approval.

During the meeting, council members decided to break the map down into four quadrants and look at various aspects to determine what changes they would like to see. The council was briefed on the history of the plans and unanimously decided to use the planning and zoning commission’s proposal as their starting point.

The council is working with geographical information systems to produce a future land-use map, which will include several layers with the thoroughfare and annexation plans. The council’s next workshop meeting is at 5 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Utility Collections conference room, 210 W. Avenue C.
