A Killeen couple will coordinate volunteers at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, which officially opens Tuesday.
The first burial will be Wednesday.
Retired Sgt. Maj. Theron and Gail Johnson were chosen by Charles Walden, director of Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery that will serve veterans in surrounding 44 counties.
What they will be doing is coordinating all the volunteers that we are going to use out here, Walden said. We will have volunteers to help on any type of assembly dedications, monuments being placed or anything thats going to cause a crowd.
Walden said the Johnsons will be their link to local veteran organizations.
Theron Johnson and the late retired Chief Warrant Officer 2 Michael H. Roberts are credited for igniting the desire to get the veterans cemetery started.
Becoming the volunteer coordinator, Johnson said, is an honor.
They are state people and only get paid Monday through Friday, the retired sergeant major said. They have a small staff. ... So, we are going to have to have some volunteers out there do different jobs.
The Johnsons said they hope to have a meeting with commanders of veteran organizations within the next week at the Cemeterys Administration Building.
Volunteers will be needed to help with many tasks to help make the cemetery run in an outstanding manner to honor those, who will be interred at the cemetery, Johnson said.
There will be special need for volunteers on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
They will also be looking for volunteers to secure the cemetery gates in the evenings and on weekends, raise and lower flags, answer telephones and take part in honor guards.
Volunteers do not have to be a veteran or member of veteran organization to take part at the cemetery.
