The city of Killeen is partnering with the Central Texas Council of Governments to host a hazardous household waste collection event Saturday.

Residents can dispose of hazardous household waste materials, such as petroleum products, corrosives, fertilizers, cleaners, pesticides, paint, automotive liquids and fluorescent lamps.

Tires also will be accepted for a minimum fee of $1 per tire.

Residents are asked to carefully load hazardous waste into their vehicles and secure any materials that may be fragile.

City officials request that residents keep waste in original containers with labels, if possible.

Leaking containers should be put into spill-proof containers.

“The events are useful in reducing the amount of potentially harmful chemicals placed into the landfill each year, and provide our citizens a means to properly and safely recycle and dispose of a wide variety of flammable, caustic, poisonous and toxic materials,” said Peter DiLillo, city recycling manager. “These home chemical collection events provide our citizens a desired service and are well attended each time they are held.”

The Central Texas Council of Governments receives about $115,000 annually to provide similar projects.

The city, upon council approval, will contribute $15,000 toward the event as well as contributing about $5,700 to cover staff overtime, advertising costs, tire recycling expenses and other expenses.

A complete list of acceptable materials is at killeentexas.gov/hhw.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Killeen Special Events Center, 3601 South W.S. Young Drive.
