While Killeen Independent School District will continue to use the electronic-based CSCOPE curriculum next school year, the money to purchase it will come from a new funding source, according to district officials.

At a regular meeting Tuesday night, the school board voted unanimously to pay $261,163 to use the CSCOPE curriculum for grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

This is the third year the district will use CSCOPE. However, instead of using money from the school's general funds to pay for its use, the district will take the money from its Instructional Materials Allotment, or IMA.

"The IMA funds are new this year," said Diana Miller, the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. "We'd just like to change the funding source."

The allotment was passed by the state Legislature in 2011, and gives each school a specific amount of money to purchase instructional materials like textbooks, as well as other materials technological equipment and technology-related services.

The district was given just over $6 million for the biennium. Counting the carry-over of some of the funds from the 2011-12 school year, the district has just over $3.2 million to spend for the 2012-13 school year.

Miller said the CSCOPE curriculum is updated each year to reflect changes in requirements and standards, and that the price is based off of the previous year's average daily attendance.

"Almost every year the state is updating standards," said Miller. "(CSCOPE) is a living document throughout the school year."

Muller agreed and said continuing to use the curriculum is a critical tool for teachers.

The trustees also approved several other items, including a supplemental lease agreement with the Army for Clear Creek Elementary School, and a waiver to the Texas Education Agency to continue a cap on the number of foreign exchange students at five per high school campus.
