A family friend caught a 32-year-old Killeen man partially naked with a 13-year-old Temple girl he met over the Internet, Temple police said Wednesday.
Temple police were called to the 3600 block of Ivanhoe Drive at 11 a.m. Tuesday after a family friend said he walked in on Jorge Mendoza Jr., 32, of Killeen, partially unclothed with a 13-year-old girl. Mendoza ran away after being discovered, but police found him in a nearby backyard, the news release stated.
The investigation indicates that Mendoza met the 13-year-old girl through a social networking Web site. The man received the girl's address through a chat room. Sgt. Brad Hunt said he did not know which Web site it was.
Mendoza went to the girl's home and she let him in while her parents were away. The family friend walked in soon after, police said.
Mendoza lives in Killeen, but works in Temple. Hunt was not sure if Mendoza met the girl while in Temple for work or if he made a separate trip.
Mendoza was arrested on a charge of indecency with a child by contact. He was taken to the Bell County Jail awaiting arraignment Wednesday.
Hunt said parents should monitor their children's Internet use.
"Definitely always be aware of what your child's activities are on the computer, online, e-mail and social Web sites. It's your computer, you have right to know everything they're doing on it or they can't use it. That should be the rule," Hunt said.
Hunt said police rely on vigilant parents or victims who report crimes when adults contact minors online for sex. Temple does not have a cybercrime or computer crime division, he said.
