BELTON - Midway through jury selection, a Killeen man pleaded guilty Tuesday to raping a child.

Jose Angel Curet Jr., 28, will face up to life in prison on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a 4-year-old boy.

Curet entered into a plea agreement with the Bell County District Attorney's Office, slightly decreasing the severity of the charge against him.

If found guilty by a jury, the defendant would have faced a minimum of 20 years in prison, said prosecutor Paul McWilliams. Instead, Curet could receive as little as five years in prison from 426th District Court Judge Fancy Jezek. A sentencing hearing has not been set.

When Curet entered his plea, the prosecution had decided on the jurors it would scratch from a pool of about 50 Bell County residents.

Jurors were dismissed after a brief hearing, and Curet returned to the custody of sheriff's deputies. He has been in the Bell County Jail since March 2010.

Police filed charges against Curet in July 2010 after a young boy told authorities Curet had forced him to perform a sexual act. The child told investigators with the Child Advocacy Center of Central Texas that Curet sexually assaulted him on several occasions.
