The city of Killeen is hoping for more participation this year in its annual outdoor holiday decorating contest.
Wilfred Brewster, volunteer service director, said last year the number of entries in the decorating contest waned, but he’s hoping for a boost in holiday spirit this season.
“I think a lot of people didn’t participate because of the economy; they wanted to conserve electricity and such,” he said. “We are hoping and praying that this season more people will light up and participate.”
Brewster said the city began the initiative in 1993. “It’s a way to show your holiday spirit and spread the cheer around,” he said.
Brewster said in previous years, anywhere from 20 to 30 people would participate in the contest.
A change in the voting process in recent years also helped the entire city get involved. In past years, a committee would drive around and judge the decorated homes, but now everyone can go online to the city’s website and vote for their favorite.
Applications to participate in the contest can be found on the city’s website at www.killeentexas.gov/volunteer. The deadline is Nov. 30.
Brewster said to participate residents can email the application and a digital photo of their home to email@example.com.
Photo entries will be posted on the city’s website for the public to vote Dec. 2-14.
The winners are scheduled to be announced Dec. 16.
