Killeen police identified a man killed Tuesday in the city's third homicide this year.

David Kentrell Smith, 31, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to an autopsy report released Wednesday by the Office of the Medical Examiner. The report ruled the death a homicide, and Killeen Police Department detectives said the shooting possibly was drug related.

Records show Smith was indicted on a charge of possession of cocaine, less than 1 gram, in June 2011.

Smith was found dead after officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 3400 block of Barcelona Drive early Tuesday morning. Officers found Smith's body in the back bedroom of an apartment as they were clearing the residence. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Smith dead at 2:22 a.m.

The initial investigation into the shooting revealed that an unknown person wearing dark-colored clothing forced entry into the residence about 1:50 a.m. Several gunshots were heard and the person fled the area. Police released no further information about the gunman Wednesday.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at (254) 526-8477, go to www.killeencrimestoppers.com or text KILLEEN along with the tip to 274637. All information is anonymous and could lead to a cash reward.
