Killeen police: Man killed in shooting late Thursday night

Killeen police are investigating the shooting death of a 24-year-old man that occurred late Thursday night on Hereford Lane.

Officers responded to the 3200 block of Hereford Lane at 11:03p.m., after Killeen Police Department received a 911 call reporting that someone had been shot at that address. Upon arrival, officers found a deceased man in the living room. 

An investigation revealed that the victim, Latternace Deshawn Newsome, was visiting the apartment when he and another male became involved in a verbal altercation, according to a KPD news release. The altercation turned physical and the male shot the victim and fled the apartment, the release stated.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Newsome dead at 11:35 p.m. and ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences, KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith stated in the release.

No suspects had been apprehended as of Friday morning.
