Police believe a Killeen man killed his 22-year-old girlfriend during a domestic disturbance.
Killeen police filed a murder charge Thursday against Kevin Clavon Wright, 30, in the shooting death of Deverelle Johnson.
Wright shot his girlfriend in the head during an argument around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said. The homicide happened at an apartment in the 1100 block of Garth Drive, north of Rancier Avenue near downtown.
The gunshots awoke neighbors who called police. When police arrived, neighbors said Johnson had been shot and was not breathing.
Police located Wright nearby, Smith said. Wright remained in the Killeen City Jail Thursday. He is expected to be arraigned today.
Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin pronounced Johnson dead at 3:05 a.m. He ordered an autopsy with the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
Thursday's homicide was the second reported in the city in 2010. Willie Lee Netter, 21, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Karon Deonta Counts, 18, on Jan. 6.
