KISD board votes to close Fowler Elementary School

Posted

After joining the Killeen Independent School District more than 50 years ago, Fowler Elementary School is closing permanently.

During its Tuesday meeting, the KISD Board of Trustees voted to close the school at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

“It’s very difficult to make the decision to close a campus, particularly a campus that has been in Killeen ISD (since 1956) and has performed as well as it has performed,” Superintendent Robert Muller said. “The decision is not made lightly.”

Muller said the decision to close the school was driven by a business decision that helps the district use resources more efficiently.

For fiscal year 2013, general fund expenditures per student enrolled were highest, across all campuses, at Fowler Elementary, where it costs $5,437 per student, Muller said.

Based on the rezoning of attendance zones, which was also approved Tuesday, Muller said the majority of Fowler students will attend Clifton Park, with some Fowler students attending East Ward and West Ward elementary schools.

Attendance zones for Haynes, Meadows, Recees Creek, Saegert and Trimmier elementary schools will also change, after the district's 33rd, yet-to-be-named, elementary school opens later this year.
